Do You Need Painting & Finishing?

A professional is worth it for exteriors, tall rooms and stairwells, cabinets, anything needing a spray finish, and whole-house repaints. Most of the quality in a paint job is in the preparation, and that is where professionals spend their time.

A single bedroom with standard ceilings is a fair weekend DIY job for somebody patient.

What Do Painting & Finishing Pros Do?

Preparation first: moving and covering furniture, masking, washing, scraping, sanding, filling and priming. Then the finish coats, cutting in by hand and rolling or spraying the field. Exterior work adds pressure washing, caulking and repairs to rotted trim. The last step is clean-up and a walk-through for touch-ups.

  • Liability insurance, and a licence where your state requires one for painting.
  • Whether the quote names the paint brand and product line, and how many coats.
  • What preparation is included - scraping, priming, caulking, minor repairs.
  • For homes built before 1978, whether they follow lead-safe work practices (EPA RRP certification).
  • Who moves furniture and who supplies materials.

What moves the price

  • Square footage and ceiling height.
  • How much preparation the surfaces need.
  • Trim, doors and cabinets, which take far longer per square foot than walls.

Painting & Finishing: common questions

How often should a house exterior be repainted?

It depends on the siding, the paint, the climate and how much sun each side gets. Peeling, chalking or bare wood are the signs it is due, whatever the calendar says.

Is one coat enough?

Rarely for a colour change or bare surfaces. Two coats is the usual standard; a quote that prices one should say so.

Can cabinets be painted instead of replaced?

Often, if the boxes are sound. It is detailed work - cleaning, deglossing, priming and usually spraying - so it is priced accordingly, but it typically costs much less than new cabinets.
